Working in the fashion industry, people usually assume I must have a huge closet filled with the latest trends. Surprisingly not true!
Believe it or not, my career has been focused on doing exactly the opposite. Paring down and finding the perfect solution to a less is more lifestyle has been my vision and inspiration. I love perfecting the minimalist wardrobe. It keeps me excited about my work and feeling challenged to design classic styles in beautiful fabrics that thrive beyond trend.
My clientele prefer to focus on buying a few well designed pieces that they love. By choosing quality over quantity, my customers end up with a wardrobe that will not only last longer but also looks and feels great.
Creating your very own 10 item capsule wardrobe has numerous benefits. Not only is it less stress but getting ready for work or going out becomes much easier. When you have minimal options, decisions are always easier to make.
Getting ready each morning only gets easier when everything in your wardrobe coordinates perfectly.
Perfect coordination doesn’t mean wearing the same thing every day. Create a uniform look that’s not a uniform.
A new way of thinking is to choose only two or three items to add to your wardrobe each season, this way you can select better quality. Higher priced items will not only last longer but fit better and feel wonderful to wear.
“It was one of the first times I realized I could respect myself enough to present myself beautifully at all times“.
Jennifer L. Scott ~ author of Lessons from Madame Chic : 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris said in her TEDx talk . Her message is one that we want to share with women across the globe!
Many of us now work from home and dress as we please but Jennifer’s comment makes you think about how you look and how it affects your mindset day to day. The quality of your clothes and environment can reflect your state of mind. You’re worth it!! Try putting some time and energy into dressing well. This is something my mother taught us while growing up and I share it today through my brand.
There are five simple steps to planning your own 10 piece wardrobe. Though 10 pieces is the goal, if your current wardrobe is overflowing, reducing it down to 20 core pieces is a huge accomplishment in itself.
It’s all about adopting a new way of looking at your wardrobe and adapting to a new mindset.
Go through every piece of clothing you own and ask yourself the following questions:
1. Does it fit?
2. Is it age-appropriate?
3. Is it my style?
4. Do I love it?
5. Do I wear it?
If it doesn’t pass the test, get rid of it. You can choose to donate, sell, or throw it away.
If its not in season store it. For example shorts in the winter or heavy sweaters in the summer.
Separate whats left into categories (dresses, skirts, pants, etc) before making your final 10 (or 20 or 30) choices. Choose classic styles in co-ordinating colours.
A perfect example of a women’s 10 piece capsule wardrobe for my clientele is the following.
• 1 pair of pants - Travel Pants
• 1 pair of jeans - Make sure they suit your body type and are comfortable
• 4 tops - Try some functional tops that go from day to night, dressy to casual.
• 1 pair of tights - Try our Travel Tights in Venezia Jersey
TIP: Can’t Choose?
Try the reverse hanger method and find out what you actually wear. Put the clothes back in your closet with the hangers reversed. Wear an item then hang it back it up normally. In a couple of weeks remove the pieces still reversed and add to the donate or sell pile.
Here you can add basic t-shirts, camisoles, sweaters, special occasion outfits, and accessories to your basic 10 item wardrobe.
Remember to keep it simple. These items aren't part of your ten core pieces but don’t go overboard or it defeats the purpose of simplifying.
It’s all about maintaining a minimalist mindset when shopping for clothes so it's important to make sure you always have a plan. Sticking to the 10 piece capsule wardrobe might be hard for some and maybe you use it for only work or travel clothes. That’s OK. What you learn along the way will begin to impact all your clothing purchases. See below for some examples of what our customers like to use to create their perfect 10 pc wardrobe.
